Is Obama really this naive?

Like most Americans today I do listen to the news. I don’t really have a choice to listen to Break The Matrix news in my car so thanks to my trusty XM Radio I flip back and forth between Fox News and CNN. Now I’m well aware that mainstream media isn’t an accurate depiction of what’s going on in the world but at least it keeps me from trying to find music to listen to…

Anyway on to my point… this morning as I was driving in to work I was listening to the bickering going on between John McCain and Barack Obama and I couldn’t help but laugh to myself. On one hand we’ve got McCain saying he wouldn’t grant an audience to anyone who “sponsors” terrorism and then on the other hand you’ve got Barack Obama telling us he’d sit down with anyone who would listen.

I don’t know about you but today I was a little concerned when I heard this portion from Obama’s speech:

"Here's the truth: the Soviet Union had thousands of nuclear weapons, and Iran doesn't have a single one. But when the world was on the brink of nuclear holocaust, Kennedy talked to Khrushchev and he got those missiles out of Cuba. Why shouldn't we have the same courage and the confidence to talk to our enemies? That's what strong countries do, that's what strong presidents do, that's what I'll do when I'm president of the United States of America."

Now it’s possible I’m wrong because I’m not a history major but the last time I checked Kennedy didn’t just fly over to the USSR (at the time) and sit down and say “Let’s just be friends and end this”… as I recall Kennedy went to Congress with information regarding the missiles in Cuba (along with the other Military infrastructure) and explained to them what was going on, asked them for their support in handling the situation and then within twenty four hours had Cuba quarantined by the United States Navy. Kennedy did tighten the quarantine at one point drawing the Navy closer to Cuba turning away many ships and then he addressed Kruschev and put the blame for the entire situation on Kruschev and the USSR.

At this point there were a couple of back and forth “offers” on how to get the missiles out of Cuba but eventually after the United States (Kennedy) makes a statement that we will not invade Cuba and removes some (or all?) of our missiles in Turkey after which Kruschev immediately announces the withdrawal of the missiles from Cuba thus ending the missile crisis.

Now again I’m not a history major and I wasn’t there but it’s my understanding that this back and forth banter was not done in person. There was a clear line of communication but most (if not all of it) was written. Kennedy did not grant an audience to Kruschev but he did end the Cuban missile crisis and in turn make our country a safer place.

The point of this is… is Obama really crazy enough to just sit down with these leaders of countries who hate us? Leaders who believe the Holocaust never happened? I’m not sure this gives me an easy feeling. Is Obama really this naïve? I mean we have the polar opposites here… we’ve got John McCain who scares me to death with his ideas on foreign policy and we’ve got Brack Obama who scares me to death with his ideas on foreign policy… how do we really get through this? Obama or McCain will only serve to further ruin this country… neither of them will be able to help turn this country around… neither of them understand “real” foreign policy and it leaves me wondering where are we going to be after four or eight years under either of them.

Its called diplomacy

I'm no a big fan of Senator Obama but I believe his point is that we must return to the use of diplomacy as our primary method of engaging with other Nations, even those we may consider our enemies. Contrary to what our Decider in Chief believes, diplomacy is not appeasement. And forcing democracy on Nations at gunpoint is, as Dr. Paul points out in his book, isolationism.

We can achieve more good in in the world by adhering to the Constitution, and protecting freedom and liberty here in these United States. World leadership by example should be our chosen method of freeing the world from tyranny and oppression. Diplomacy should be our preferred method of sharing our message. Not talking to our perceived enemies has never worked! I cite Cuba as an example of our failed policy of isolationism.

The Iranians correctly mistrust our government and its intentions. We must earn their trust if we are ever to be able to have peace again, in the middle east. We can only earn their trust through good words and deeds, not by threatening them. That's just my $0.02.

Did I say that our current

Did I say that our current policy is correct? Did I say that our President of the United States of America is correct in the way he is handling it? Nope... not one bit. I in fact said that what McCain and Obama are proposing is wrong.
