Type of Content: Video Inspired by an article written by two students and Obama volunteers at Yale, a few Philadelphians met online and created a campaign called "Obama Works." The idea, which manifested in the first "Obama Philly Sweep" on a recent Saturday, is that the grassroots momentum surrounding Obama's candidacy can be turned into local public service projects that can make a difference in communities RIGHT NOW. It's a different way of making politics work for people, and it's spreading. Read »

How about everyone cleans up the little area in front of their house that they're responsible for!
If they do, their property value will increase, their schools will improve, their neighborhood will become a destination, and they can sell out and retire to Bermuda!
If they leave it dirty then their neighborhood will deteriorate, their children will have limited futures, and .......... oh never mind, Obama we'll be there to save the day! And he'll do it with my money and without my consent!
Arrest Obama!
Seriously, lets take a minute to inspect the neighborhoods in Philly that have clean and sparkly streets:
(there are many)
Surprise! The gov't had absolutely nothing to do with it. The streets remained clean because........the people who lived there cleaned them!
Do you need a college degree to know how to pick up a piece of trash and put it in a large receptacle?
Perhaps its a failure of our education system. If only our teachers were better paid and better trained, more passionate perhaps, then maybe they'd be able to teach our children what trash is, how to pick it up, what a trashcan is, its purpose in life, how to use one.................
P.S. When they're done will you send those volunteers over to my house. Maybe they can tidy up a bit!
I prefer that none of my money is used to provide student loans or to adminstrate a program of "volunteer" community service. Does Obama give me a choice to keep my money, or will he take it anyway?
That's what I thought.

is a wonderful musician and therfore his descent into politics is greatly appreciated.... however, I have a certain revulsion to the idea of "community service" as it is currently known.
To me it sounds too much like a punishment for a teengae DUI issued out by an indolent judge. If people really want to perform a communitiy service they should charge for it, and if the community is unwilling to pay, then it might not be worth their time..........
What's wrong with community service? What's wrong with neighbors helping neighbors?
Not liking Barack Obama is one thing, but equating community service to slavery makes no sense. Ok. I'm over it now.
Anyway, Cassidy. Cool story. I think the grassroots activism that is being demonstrated in Obama's campaign and in others can affect real change in this country if it continues after the election.
This site was started by Ron Paul supporters and it continues after he dropped out of the race.
Will we see the same level of enthusiasm after November 4? Heaven knows we'll need for more groups and individuals to be involved in their communities.

Barack Obama's idea of public service is nothing more than slavery to the state. I am horribly frightened by his idea of giving a college education to all kids who serve the state because it perpetuates the idea that the government owns you. I'd rather earn my college money than have it handed to me by some authoritarian regime in exchange for my services.
Big Z is tripping.
Community service is a much better way to pay for your college education than expensive loans that keep you in indentured servitude for the next 10 to 20 years after graduation.
I'm sure Big Z also doesn't like the Canadian model. Students pay about $3000 a year in college tuition. Taxes subsidize the rest. Or the German system in which the state pays for 100% of college tuition.
Just like with their health care systems, these nations view education as a right of citizenship because they want intelligent citizens. In the U.S. ignorance is celebrated, and a college degree is seen as a prize for the rich and the elite.
Our ignorance is partially why we're in the situation we're in right now.
