Even if its really not

Even if its really not martial law, the items he was discussing are frightening.

Does anyone know if we're still on Orange Alert?

Every night I get bit by mosquitoes while walking around the perimeter of my house, looking for terrorists. I'd just as soon stay inside until the weather gets cooler if we've cancelled the War on Terror while our economy collapses. Please update if you know.

"Martial Law" is the name of a House rule

Apparently, "Martial Law", as used by Rep. Burgess, referred to the House leadership deciding that the House would be forced to vote on the bailout bill as soon as it is available, without waiting for the normal process. This, like the passage of the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act, means that they won't have time to fully consider the actual text of the bill before voting on it. One would hope that such an instance would guarantee a "Nay" vote, but it's more likely that votes will be along party lines, following the recommendations of party leadership.

Are we sure he isn't being figurative?

The speaker of the house can't declare martial law - is he referring figuratively to some gag order perhaps imposed by Pelosi merely on the members of congress? If they put the U.S. under martial law and didn't tell anyone, it would really martial law, other than perhaps suspension of liberties upon arrest, which we've had for quite some time anyway!

Anyone have any clarification?

So they will jam it through the vote before anyone can

analyse the full implications of the bill.

This bill should be a "no-brainer" in any case. Justy vote no congress!

I actually think it is

I actually think it is something along those lines, sort of a forced congressional vote thing...

Any attorneys or congressmen around here that can settle this question?

Clarification on Burgess statement/Martial Law

cv1122 Posted by cv1122 on Mon, 09/29/2008 - 03:38
Tom is right

Only the president could conceivably have the authority to declare martial law to have nationwide effect. Governors of state's have the authority as well but obviously only for their own jurisdictions.

The congressman is using the term martial law metaphorically.

It's Always Interesting To Me

just how many "useful idiots" there are in our system. But, that's really nothing new. It's been something of an engineered phenomenon for well over 100 years now.

How easy it seems to be to find people who out of greed, ego, or other non-virtuous reasons readily step up to participate in vile games. Somehow most, if not all, of them operate under the mistaken perception that they are indispensible, that they are beyond consequence, that their "generous benefactors" could never do without them. Such an inflated sense of self would be funny if the results of their behaviors and affects were not so dire.

I would like to believe that at least a few in those ranks would wake up and see the handwriting on the wall, that at least a few of them would step forth and confess to their ignorance and to their crimes. I believe the people at-large would receive them gladly and welcome them into the fold.

Do those misguided people truly not realize what lies in their paths? Can they not look back into history and see the fates of those who have transgressed before them? Or is it a case that the "hooks" are set too deeply?

I saw this coming.

Thanks for posting this Kurt, just like the debates they cut out those who oppose their goals.
