Let me give you a little history lesson, Hitler didn't kill for religion. He killed because he believed the Aryan race was superior to all others. You're getting race and religion confused, when they are two very different things.

To both Kate and Trevor, simply watch the recent PBS 'Nova' show entitled 'Where Did We Come From?' - It's available, right now, on Netflix instant queue, so you can stream it over the Xbox, PS3, Wii, or Computer. They were able to put together the initial building blocks of life in a closed lab mimicking what we imagine early Earth was like in terms of atmospheric conditions and etc etc etc. Just watch the damn movie, and see where they literally recreate the evolution that began millions and billions of years ago. No, they are not all the way there, but it stands as further proof that the only reason it's a 'Theory of Evolution' and not a Scientific Law, is because we just haven't figured it all out yet. It's only a matter of time.

In regards to the point about 'a chessboard'. Or the need for an explanation of 'But even if we started from a single central mass that is ever expanding' blah blah blah. I got it. Here we are. We are here. But where did the 'here' come from. How did our planet come into being. What were the pieces that made the planet come into being. Blah blah blah blah blah. I got it. No one will ever explain 'the beginning of time'. But it's ludicrous to put any stock or faith into a polytheistic or monotheistic ideology with the hopes of labeling all of life's big questions.

And any New Age Christian who feels that 'God put everything in motion and we are simply getting closer to understanding' or whatever other nonsense is raised that makes a person think for even a moment that they have Religion and Creation and the Universe pegged. I mean really, come off it.

I don't need to know where the dust and clouds and random elements that were here before Earth was here in order to be happy. And not a single religion in existence has the knowledge to know anything about life. If anything, the scientologists have a better stake on the history of the universe than anyone else, but they are nuts as well.

Point blank, 'where we came from' in terms of 'but how did it all come into being' does not prove or disprove a god, but to take the new and learned understanding human beings have over their environment and of the universe, and still want to apply old tribal ideology (since every religion started when people still built their homes out of fire ash and feces), is also ridiculous.

Blah. We are here. There is no god. When I die, I'm simply going to fall asleep and never wake up again. Honestly, I try not to think about it, it's fucking scary. And not only is it scary, but that fear only reinforces my disbelief of a lord and god. I can not accept the fear as a reasoning to believe.

Better safe than sorry shouldn't be good enough for the god everyone claims to praise.

Actually we know why are here, and we know where the chessboard came from and what processes made it what it is today. I admit, there is much science doesn't know (yet) about the physics of the Big Bang, but we know how Earth was formed, and how animals grew and evolved upon it. The earth was created by the collision of large masses in space (this is proven by the asteroids that have been found that contain the exact chemical make up of the earth). The large mass of earth finally got large enough to have a gravitational force, thus pulling other asteroids and small planets towards it. After billions of years in which the earth was just a molten ball of melted elements, it started to cool, (from the outside in, explaining the molten core the earth contains). Asteroids continued to crash into the earth, a lot of them contained water (H20), and some of them contained amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. As this happened more and more, complex proteins were formed, eventually forming very basic and primitive cyanobacteria, which fluorish in water. Cyanobacteria are autotrophic, meaning they take in sunlight and carbon dioxide, and release oxygen gas (O2) as a bi-product when they create sugars they use for energy. This is how we got an atmosphere full of oxygen. The oxygenated atmosphere caused primarily anaerobic bacteria to develop oxygen harnessing capabilities, in turn creating the mitochondria necessary for eukaryotic cells. Thus stemmed a whole new group or clade of animals, the protists. Flagellated protists are the ancestors of all animals and fungi.

I would also point to your own concession that the theories are not correct 1% of the time (or whatever percent it may in fact be). That may sound like a small amount and it can lead you to believe the theory is almost complete but in fact it can mean the truth would turn the theory on it's head as it has done many times throughout history.

Thanks for the rational discussion Sean. I look at science and it's explanations as if a group of humans came across a chess board and were (through scientific deduction) describing what the different pieces could do and what the rules of the game were. That's all well and fine but at the end of the day the question of "who created the game in the first place" still remains. That is the deeper question (at least for me) that "God" could be an attempt to answer and one I'm not sure science ever could answer. So I think it's a bit more involved than the two questions you put out there, although those could have been the initial motivators and certainly are among the list of questions we can come up with as to why we are motivated to conceive of a God. If the chessboard is indeed created by God then we can observe him/her/it by observing the chessboard - God's creation.
