It's not fair to the legals

Being a long-time libertarian, in principle I am for open borders in the true spirit of liberty. That's in a nice ideal world where there's no welfare state and no jus soli birth right citizenship. Ron Paul said it best - we wouldn't have to worry about border control if we remove the primary incentive for a lot of these illegals to come over - heck they can basically squat here and have a kid who is automatically a citizen and uses social services that my tax dollars pay for.

Here in DC, there are a shocking amount of apparent illegals coming in that camp in unattended cul-de-sacs where construction bosses can come by and pick up cheap labor, which of course takes jobs away from citizens. They don't even bother to learn english or assimilate culturally. It's rude and repulsive, and they act like they're entitled to it or something.

And then there's the legal ones - how would you feel if you had spent a decade or more going through the byzantine INS naturalization process, doing everything the right way and then you see these illegals getting the same benefits basically without going through that process? Boy I would be steamed! The legal ones, the law-abiding types that have something to contribute to the country that we don't already have natively, are the ones we want!

The whole situation disgusts me. In a way I'm glad we're going to have a severe depression so hopefully those remittance-sending scumdogs will go back to their country, the country represented by the flag on their car which is NOT the stars and stripes. Any other country, it would be offensive - when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

disclosure: I am a US citizen from a military family, I'm an ACLU member as well as an NRA member. I generally don't agree with the ACLU's position on immigration rights and gun laws, but I give them money anyway since they fight the good fight on most other constitutional and civil liberties issues.

Why I am against illegal immigration.

As a recently retired U.S. Border Patrol Agent, I'm sure my opinion on illegal immration will not surprise anybody.
Now most members of this site already are grinding their teeth because we all know the Border Patrol is no friend of the ACLU, including myself. All the big time liberals are screaming for open borders and posting video's of them disrespecting agents while they try and perform their duties at checkpoints.

Well, lets pretend there wasn't anybody on the border. Open borders and people are crossing the border by the hundreds of thousands every month. While I was an agent, I'll give you some basic stats. If 100 people are apprehended a night, at least 5 to 10 of them are going to be discovered as prior agg felons. At my station in Az, there were times we would apprehend 700 to 1000 people a night. So at minimum, there were 50 people that were not going to come in the country and continue their lives in crime against hard working American citizens that night.
That is one station, one night. There are 21 sectors in the USA. Each sector has anywhere from 3 to 8 stations. Take the numbers of each station and everynight, the Border Patrol is stopping at least 200 to 400 felons in their tracks.
This one reason alone would make any red blooded American happy we are on the border protecting its citizens from harm from an invading force. But I know there will be somebody out there that is ready to argue against us, even on this one point alone. I know the stats are out there on how many illegals are in our prison system, the numbers are over 300,00 easily. We're talking murderers, rapist, drunk drivers killing our citizens, burglars, gang bangers, etc, etc.
As an agent, I was attacked many times, I was surrounded by 3 men trying to take my head off with wooden clubs. I had at least 15 windows in my truck smashed out by rock throwers, sure more than one of you out there are sorry their aim wasn't good enough to accomplish their goal. I broke fingers in fights and I could go on and on. And I haven't even touched on how many thousands of pounds of drugs I seized.
I really don't care who writes back in favor of letting illegals come in despite their records of violence against agents and innocent American citizens. As far as I'm concerned, they could double my taxes if that is what it takes to stop the invasion and build twice as many prisons. And this my friends is why and how I feel about illegal immgration.

Show both sides

You should do the numbers to both sides, if only this has been an interesting topic I've thought about many times.

What I mean is, what is the other side of the figures? How much would it cost to fight the borders and create ANOTHER (specialized) task force that fails to do anything (much like the war on crime, war on drugs, and war on terror). How much money will go and/or come to/from special interest groups and lobbyists? How much money will slip between the cracks and go to some other interest (much like Homeland Security).

I imagine if you total all of those up, the amount becomes about the same to prevent/turn a shoulder illegal immigration.

Our past is littered with illegal immigration and it will continue. Just depends on how you want to deal with it. I for one, am still on the fences about this.

Also, if you do come up with a total for the above stated, shoot me a line. I'd be interested to see what that number would be close to. To get a good idea on how much a border protection would cost, we can look to the aforementioned programs (war on drugs, war on crime, war on terror, homeland security).

Good reading material though. Thank you.
