Canadian journalist Linda McQuaig displays a fascinatingly deep knowledge of American corporate machinery and intrigue, as she exposes the real reason why Europe and America have meddled in the Middle East for the past 100 years.

It's the Crude, Dude: Greed, Gas, War, and the American Way manages to inject humor into a very depressing subject. More importantly, McQuaig, though Canadian, gives American citizens a vast amount of documented data and historical support for discussing Middle East policy with our elected representatives...and for holding their feet to the fire until we end our imperial pretensions.

Supply and demand can't account for the massive

increases in price. Some people blame speculation in the commodities markets - there's a thread here dealing with that topic

Speaking of the Crude.

Now that the price of gas to the American consumer now approaches the price of gas in Europe, it is especially important for oversight of American corporate machinery. On the surface, it would appear that supply and demand has made the price adjustment happen like it do. But in Europe, 60% of the price paid at the pump goes to taxes. America's "highway taxes' have remained the same for years...Why is the wholesale price of gas so much lower in Europe? And if the US adopted a similar gas tax stategy, would that dampen any additional profit?
